vaterraum (2022)
There are rooms you never want to enter and if you do, you want to leave them as soon as possible. Prisons or torture chambers are such rooms. The presence of a person can also be perceived as a space. And if that person is a toxic parent, as their child you often don‘t have the option to escape that space.
My father was a raging alcoholic. He drank every day and as is the case with so many alcoholic people, was very argumentative, unfair, abusive, unreflective, loud, nasty, unforgiving, ecpathetic and, above all, was always right. Until the bitter end of every argument, he for-ced me to stay in his toxic father space.
The fact that the following day he could no longer remember the events of the lecture was symptomatic. As a child, you can only lose.
By changing roles from son to father, re-living and his habitus, ge-stures, and especially his drinking excesses, I am reawakening and reworking this difficult time photographically.
